Al Smythe
Vice President, Research & Development
Al joins the ShiraTronics team with over 30 years’ experience in the medical device industry building and leading multi-disciplinary and multi-site teams. Most recently, Al served as Sr. Director of Research and Development Systems Engineering at Medtronic where he was responsible for the development of neuromodulation product families. Prior to his time at Medtronic, he has held leadership positions at 3M, St. Jude Medical, Boston Scientific and Honeywell. Al’s career highlights include a key role in developing the world’s first dual chamber defibrillator, pioneering resynchronization therapy for heart failure, responsibility for atrial fibrillation mapping and ablation product development and more. He is a member of INCOSE (International Council on System Engineering), Certified PMP (Project Management Professional), Certified Scrum Master, Certified Product Owner, and has numerous patents in medical devices. Al holds a B.S degree in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics from the University of Minnesota and completed courses in Multiprocessor and Distributed Computer Architectures at Stanford University.
